Definition
The mediastinum is the central compartment of your chest cavity, located between the lungs. Think of it as the heart of your chest – figuratively and literally! It contains vital organs such as the heart, major blood vessels (aorta, vena cava), trachea (windpipe), esophagus, thymus gland, and lymph nodes. It extends from the sternum (breastbone) in the front to the vertebral column (spine) in the back. The mediastinum acts as a pathway for structures connecting the neck and abdomen. It's a busy, important space!
