Definition
A metalloid is an element that has properties intermediate between those of metals and nonmetals. They sometimes behave like metals and sometimes like nonmetals, depending on the conditions. Common metalloids include silicon, germanium, arsenic, and antimony. Think of them as the 'switch-hitters' of the periodic table! Metalloids are crucial in semiconductors and other electronic devices. They're not quite metal, not quite not, always something in between.
