Definition
A microbe, short for microorganism, is a microscopic organism that can only be seen with the aid of a microscope. Microbes include bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, and viruses. Some are beneficial, playing vital roles in nutrient cycling and decomposition, while others are pathogenic and cause disease. They are found everywhere on Earth, from soil and water to the human body. Think of them as the invisible workforce of our planet, both helpful and harmful.
