Definition
A mobcap is a soft, round, cloth cap worn by women to cover their hair. It was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Think of it as a historical hairnet or a very loose beanie. Unlike a modern fashion statement, it was primarily worn for practicality and hygiene. It helped keep hair clean and out of the way during housework or sleep. Mobcaps were often simple and unadorned, but some were decorated with lace or ribbons.
