A *mujtahid* is someone in Islam who is qualified to interpret Islamic law (Sharia) independently. They possess deep knowledge of the Quran, Hadith (sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad), and legal principles. Think of them as legal scholars capable of making rulings on new issues based on established Islamic texts. Unlike simply following existing interpretations, a *mujtahid* can offer fresh perspectives. It's a high level of scholarly achievement, kind of like being a Supreme Court Justice for Islamic law. Being a *mujtahid* requires years of study and a strong understanding of Islamic tradition.
