Definition
A Nicol prism is a type of polarizer, an optical device that produces polarized light. Polarized light is light in which the waves oscillate in a single plane. It is constructed from a calcite crystal that has been cut and rejoined in a specific way. Nicol prisms are used to analyze polarized light or to create it for scientific experiments. Imagine looking through special sunglasses that only let light through in one direction; that's similar to what a Nicol prism does, but with much greater precision.
