Definition
The *order Anostraca* is a group of crustaceans characterized by the absence of a carapace (a protective shell covering the head and thorax). They include fairy shrimp and brine shrimp, which are adapted to living in temporary pools and salt lakes, respectively. These creatures swim upside down, using their leaf-like appendages for locomotion and filter-feeding. They are often found in extreme environments, showcasing remarkable adaptations to harsh conditions. Think of them as the pioneers of the crustacean world, thriving where others can't.
