Definition
Order Plecoptera refers to the insect order containing stoneflies. These insects are characterized by their aquatic nymph stage and terrestrial adult stage. Nymphs live in cool, well-oxygenated streams and rivers, often under rocks. They are pollution-sensitive, making them excellent bioindicators. β οΈ Adults have two pairs of membranous wings, which they fold flat over their abdomen. They are relatively weak fliers. Plecoptera are crucial to stream ecosystems.
