Definition
Palatine tonsils are a pair of lymphatic tissues located on either side of the back of the throat. They are the most visible and commonly referred to as "tonsils". Their job is to trap pathogens entering through the mouth or nose. They are almond-shaped and vary in size from person to person. When inflamed, they cause discomfort and can lead to tonsillitis. They play a key role in the immune system, especially during childhood.
