Definition
Papovavirus is an older classification for a group of small DNA viruses that cause tumors in animals and can cause warts or other growths in humans. The name is derived from three viruses: papillomavirus, polyomavirus, and simian vacuolating virus (SV40). Nowadays, these viruses are classified into separate families: papillomaviruses and polyomaviruses. Think of it like a retired boy band whose members went solo. While the term 'papovavirus' is less common now, understanding it helps to know the history of virology. The viruses are known for their ability to induce cell growth and sometimes cancer.
