Definition
A parapodium is a lateral extension or fleshy protrusion from the body of certain invertebrates, notably polychaete worms. These paired appendages are used for locomotion, respiration, and sometimes even feeding. Unlike vertebrate limbs, they are not jointed and vary greatly in form. Imagine them as tiny, flexible paddles along the sides of the worm. They enable the worm to crawl, swim, or burrow effectively. They help the worm navigate in its environment. ð
