Etymology

The word "phalanx" comes from the Greek word "phalanx," which originally referred to a battle formation of soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder. The ancient anatomists thought the arrangement of finger and toe bones resembled this formation. A phalanx of bones forming a line or connection.
