Definition
A pillar is a vertical, upright support, often cylindrical or rectangular, used to hold up a structure or stand alone as a monument. It's very similar to a column, but 'pillar' can sometimes imply a more significant or symbolic role. Think of the Lincoln Memorial with its massive pillars. Pillars provide support but also add grandeur and visual appeal. They can be made of stone, concrete, wood, or other sturdy materials.
