Definition
A pinfold, also called a pound, is a fenced enclosure used to hold stray livestock, such as sheep, cattle, or pigs. It prevents animals from wandering into gardens or fields where they could cause damage. Owners had to pay a fee to retrieve their animals from the pinfold. Pinfolds were a common feature of rural life in past centuries. It offered a safe space for animals until claimed. Its use decreased with improved fencing and animal control.
