Definition
*Pitymys* is a former genus of voles, now generally included within the *Microtus* genus. These small rodents are often found in North America and Eurasia, inhabiting underground burrows. They are known for their fossorial (burrowing) lifestyle and herbivorous diet. Unlike surface-dwelling rodents, *Pitymys* voles spend most of their time underground. Think of them as the subterranean engineers of the rodent world. Their burrowing activities play a role in soil aeration and nutrient cycling.
