Definition
A plecopteran is an insect belonging to the order Plecoptera, more commonly known as a stonefly. Plecopterans are hemimetabolous, meaning they undergo incomplete metamorphosis. Their nymphs are aquatic, living in cool, clear, well-oxygenated streams and rivers. 🏞️ They are sensitive to pollution and serve as bioindicators. Adult plecopterans are terrestrial and have two pairs of membranous wings. They fold these wings flat over their abdomen. Plecopterans are an essential part of freshwater ecosystems.
