Definition
'Precocial' describes newborn animals that are relatively mature and self-sufficient at birth or hatching. These creatures are typically born with open eyes, downy feathers (in birds), and the ability to move independently. Think of ducklings following their mother into the water shortly after hatching. 'Precocial' species invest more energy into developing offspring inside the womb or egg, resulting in more developed newborns. This contrasts with altricial animals, which are helpless and require extensive parental care.
