Definition
Ptolemaic refers to the astronomical system developed by Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer, that places Earth at the center of the universe. It's closely related to "geocentric," but specifically refers to Ptolemy's detailed model. This model, which included complex systems of epicycles and deferents to explain planetary motion, dominated astronomical thought for over 1400 years. Although incorrect, it was an impressive attempt to explain the cosmos. A simple analogy: The original iPhone compared to modern smartphones.
