The word 'queer' has a complex history. Historically, it meant strange or odd. Now, it's often used as an umbrella term for people who are not heterosexual or cisgender. It's a way for people to identify outside of traditional labels. Unlike heteronormative, it embraces diverse sexualities and gender identities. It's the opposite of conforming; it's individualistic. For some, it's a reclaimed word that once was used negatively. It's also an adjective used to describe something strange or eccentric.
