The term 'raccoon fox' is a misleading but sometimes-used name for the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides). Raccoon dogs are canids native to East Asia, belonging to the dog family (Canidae), but they bear a resemblance to raccoons due to their facial markings and stocky build. They are not closely related to either raccoons or foxes, despite the name. They are known for their hibernation habits, which is unusual for canids. They're also called 'tanuki' in Japan, where they feature prominently in folklore. They prefer wooded areas and are omnivorous.
