Definition
Raphus is a genus of extinct, flightless birds. It contains only one well-known species: the dodo. Think of it as the 'VIP club' with only one very famous, very extinct member. The dodo was endemic to Mauritius. It was a large, clumsy bird unable to fly. Its extinction is a poignant example of human-caused ecological damage. ð The genus Raphus represents a unique but lost lineage.
