The rectus medialis muscle, another name for medial rectus, is one of the six extraocular muscles. Its primary role is to adduct the eye, meaning to move the eye inwards, towards the nose. Think of it as enabling you to look cross-eyed, although that's not its usual purpose. It works in conjunction with the lateral rectus muscle to coordinate horizontal eye movements. This coordination allows for accurate tracking of objects moving towards or away from you. It's a key player in binocular vision, ensuring you see a single, clear image.
