Refraction is the bending of light or sound waves as they pass from one medium to another, like from air to water. It's why a straw in a glass of water appears bent or broken. Think of it as light taking a shortcut, changing direction because it travels at different speeds in different materials. Unlike reflection (bouncing off), refraction is transmission with a change in direction. A prism uses refraction to split white light into a rainbow π.
