A "rhumb" refers to a direction with respect to the compass points or to the angle between a ship's course and the meridian. It is one of the 32 points of the compass card. Think of it as a specific 'slice' of the compass rose. Navigators used rhumbs to describe courses before precise measurements. A rhumb is closely related to rhumb lines, which are lines of constant compass bearing. Imagine dividing a pizza π into 32 slices; each slice represents a rhumb.
