Definition
Scolytus is a genus of bark beetles belonging to the weevil family (Curculionidae). These small beetles are known for boring into the bark of trees, particularly elm trees. They create galleries under the bark, which can disrupt the flow of nutrients and water, ultimately killing the tree. Think of them as tiny tree-killers, working from within. Unlike helpful insects like bees, Scolytus beetles are destructive pests.
