Definition
"Second base" in baseball is the second of four bases a runner must reach to score a run. It is located in the middle of the infield, between first and third base. The second baseman typically covers this area, fielding ground balls and trying to tag out runners attempting to steal. Second base is a key position for turning double plays and preventing the opposing team from scoring. It requires agility, quick reflexes, and strong communication with the shortstop. Reaching second base puts a runner in scoring position.
