Definition
A soldierfish is a type of ray-finned fish closely related to squirrelfish, both belonging to the family Holocentridae. They are recognized by their reddish or orange coloration, large eyes, and spiny fins. Think of them as the armored infantry of the reef. Soldierfish are primarily nocturnal, spending their days hiding in caves and crevices. They emerge at night to feed on crustaceans and other small invertebrates. Like squirrelfish, they are a vital part of the coral reef ecosystem.
