"Sprites" are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds. They are a type of Transient Luminous Event (TLE). They look like faint, reddish jellyfish πΎ in the sky. Unlike lightning, which strikes the ground, sprites occur in the mesosphere. They are relatively rare and fleeting phenomena. Think of them as the shy cousins of lightning, only showing up for a brief moment way up high.
