A "subset" is a set contained entirely within another set. Think of it as a smaller group inside a larger group. For instance, all the students in your math class form a set, and the students who like pizza form a subset. The subset can be equal to the larger set but it cannot contain anything the larger set does not. It is denoted by the symbol ⊆. Think of your playlist (subset) being part of a larger library of songs (set).
The word "subset" is a compound word, formed by combining "sub-" (meaning under, below, or a part of) and "set." Its use became common in mathematics with the development of set theory in the 19th century. Mathematicians needed a way to describe these hierarchical relationships between collections. Therefore, the term helps indicate its meaning within a larger group.
Think of Netflix categories. The category 'Comedy' is a set containing all comedy movies. But if you look at 'Teen Comedies', this is a subset of 'Comedy' because every teen comedy is also a comedy, but not every comedy is a teen comedy! It's like a nested hierarchy of shows.
