Definition
A 'sucker' is a common name for fish in the family Catostomidae. They get their name from their fleshy, protrusible lips adapted for sucking up food from the bottom of streams and lakes. Suckers play an important ecological role by consuming detritus and invertebrates. Different species vary in size, color, and habitat preference. They are often found in North America. They are more bottom-dwellers than other species. Think of them as the clean-up crew of freshwater ecosystems.
