The tail assembly, also known as the empennage, is the rear section of an aircraft that provides stability and control. It typically consists of the vertical stabilizer (tail fin) and the horizontal stabilizer with elevators. The tail assembly helps keep the aircraft flying straight and level. It allows the pilot to control pitch (up and down) and yaw (left and right). Think of it as the airplane's steering system. Without it, the plane would be uncontrollable.
