Definition
A terminal figure is a statue or sculpted form, often a human or animal, that tapers towards the bottom and is used as a decorative architectural element. It often appears to support an entablature or other structure. Imagine it as a fancy architectural bracket. These figures are often placed at the end of a structure, hence 'terminal.' They add visual interest and a sense of grandeur to buildings. Unlike purely functional supports, terminal figures are primarily ornamental.
