Definition
A "tomtate" (Haemulon aurolineatum) is a small species of grunt found in the western Atlantic Ocean. These fish are typically silver with yellow stripes and are often seen in schools near coral reefs and seagrass beds. Tomtates produce a grunting sound, like other members of the Haemulidae family, by rubbing their teeth together. Think of them as the tiny, but noticeable members of the underwater community. 🐠
