Definition
'Trench warfare' is a type of land warfare using occupied fighting lines consisting largely of trenches, in which troops are significantly protected from the enemy's small-arms fire and are sheltered from artillery. It's characterized by long periods of stalemate with minimal territorial gains. Think of it as a war of attrition from ditches. It's more static and brutal than other forms of combat. 'Trench warfare' is to a quick duel what a chess match by mail is to a speed game 🐌.
