Trionychidae is the scientific name for a family of softshell turtles. These turtles are unique because they have flattened bodies and lack bony scutes (the scales seen on other turtles). Instead, they have a leathery skin covering their shells. Softshell turtles are primarily aquatic, living in rivers, lakes, and ponds. Think of them as the ninjas of the turtle world โ sleek and fast! They are found in North America, Africa, and Asia and are carnivores that eat fish, insects, and crustaceans.
