Definition
Turbulence is a state of chaotic motion in a fluid (liquid or gas), characterized by irregular fluctuations and mixing. Think of it as a chaotic dance of air or water molecules. It's what causes bumpy airplane rides or white-water rapids. Unlike smooth, laminar flow, turbulent flow is unpredictable. Eddies and vortices of different sizes form and dissipate randomly. Turbulence increases drag and enhances mixing.
