Definition
'Unvaned' refers to a feather that lacks a vane. The vane is the flat, web-like part of a feather, made up of barbs and barbules. So, an unvaned feather would essentially be just the central shaft, or rachis. Imagine a feather that has lost all of its fluffy, fringed material, leaving only a stiff, central quill. It is a specialized term used in ornithology. It emphasizes the lack of the vane.
