Definition
A ventricle is one of two large chambers in the heart that receives blood from an atrium and pumps it out to the body. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the aorta, which distributes it throughout the body. The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the pulmonary artery, which carries it to the lungs. Think of them as the heart's powerful pumps, ensuring blood circulates efficiently. They are larger and have thicker walls than the atria. They are essential for systemic and pulmonary circulation.
