Wahunsonacock, also known as Chief Powhatan, was the paramount chief of Tsenacommacah, a powerful alliance of Algonquian-speaking tribes in the Tidewater region of Virginia during the early 17th century. He is most famous for his interactions with the English Jamestown colonists. Think of him as the CEO of a large tribal confederation. Wahunsonacock initially maintained a complex relationship with the colonists, alternating between trade, diplomacy, and conflict. He sought to maintain his power and protect his people from encroachment. His daughter, Pocahontas, played a significant role in mediating between the Powhatan Confederacy and the English settlers.
