Definition
Xanthophyceae, or yellow-green algae, are a class of algae within the Heterokontae. They are characterized by their yellow-green pigments, primarily due to the absence of fucoxanthin. They are mainly found in freshwater habitats and can be unicellular, colonial, or filamentous. Think of them as the underappreciated artists of the aquatic world ๐จ, using a different palette of colors. They store oil instead of starch.
