Definition
"Zaire" was the official name of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from 1971 to 1997. The name was adopted by President Mobutu Sese Seko as part of his policy of "authenticity," aimed at removing colonial influences. During this period, the country experienced significant political and economic challenges. The name "Zaire" was replaced with "Democratic Republic of the Congo" after Mobutu's overthrow. It remains a significant term in the history of the DRC.
