Definition
The anal sphincter is a group of muscles at the end of the rectum controlling bowel movements. There are two parts: the internal anal sphincter (involuntary) and the external anal sphincter (voluntary). The internal sphincter keeps the anus closed most of the time. The external sphincter allows you to control when you have a bowel movement. Problems with these muscles can lead to incontinence or constipation. Think of them as the final gatekeepers in the digestive process. They ensure that waste is eliminated at the appropriate time and place.
