Definition
A click beetle is a type of beetle belonging to the family Elateridae, known for its unique 'clicking' mechanism. When placed on its back, a click beetle can snap its body, creating a clicking sound and propelling itself into the air. This action is achieved by a spine on the prosternum that fits into a groove on the mesosternum. Click beetles are typically elongated with a somewhat flattened body shape. Their larvae, known as wireworms, can be agricultural pests, feeding on roots and seeds. They inhabit various environments worldwide.
