Definition
An epizoon is an organism that lives on the external surface of an animal. Similar to an ectoparasite or ectozoon, it makes its home on the outside. Think of it as a surface dweller. Unlike parasites that burrow inside, epizoa attach themselves to the skin, scales, or feathers. Examples include barnacles on whales or certain algae on turtles. They may or may not be harmful to the host. 🐢
