Definition

A nova is a sudden brightening of a star, making it appear much brighter than normal for a short period. It's caused by a nuclear explosion on the surface of a white dwarf star in a binary system. The white dwarf pulls matter from its companion star. This accumulated matter eventually ignites in a runaway fusion reaction. Unlike a supernova, a nova does not destroy the star itself, and it can recur.

Etymology

"Nova" comes directly from Latin, meaning 'new.' The name was given because these stars appeared as 'new' stars in the sky, where previously none were visible.

Anecdote / Story
