Definition
A pterygium is a pinkish, triangular tissue growth on the cornea of the eye. It often starts on the side closest to the nose and can slowly grow across the cornea, potentially affecting vision. Think of it as a little 'wing' encroaching on your eye. It's usually caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight and wind, so it's more common in people who spend a lot of time outdoors. While generally harmless, it can cause discomfort, redness, and blurry vision if it gets too large. Treatment options range from lubricating eye drops to surgical removal.
