Definition
A signifier is the form a sign takes. It could be a word, image, sound, or gesture that represents something else. It's the visible or audible part of a sign, the thing we perceive directly. Think of it as the label on a product; it points to something beyond itself. The signifier, paired with the signified (the concept it represents), creates a sign. The relationship between signifier and signified is often arbitrary and culturally determined. 🤔
